The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially rolled out a new curriculum framework on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students of Classes 3 to 8 starting from the 2026-27 academic session.

  • The framework aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023, emphasising foundational skills for the 21st century.
  • ‘Computational Thinking and Understanding AI’ has been designated as the official training theme for CBSE schools during the current session.
  • Schools are encouraged to organise district-level deliberations (DLDs) and workshops to discuss best practices for integrating CT and AI concepts across subjects.
  • The curriculum focuses on progressive pedagogy from play-based learning in primary grades to abstraction and ethical AI use in middle school.
  • Mathematics is positioned as the cornerstone for building computational thinking readiness among young learners through puzzles, games, and interdisciplinary activities.
  • CBSE has issued detailed guidelines for Lead Schools and Sahodaya School Complexes to host one-day workshops showcasing innovative teaching practices.
  • The initiative aims to build foundational CT & AI literacy, foster ethical awareness, and prepare students for future careers in AI, machine learning, and data science.
  • Teachers will receive support through capacity-building programmes to effectively deliver the new curriculum in classrooms.
  • The board has emphasised interdisciplinary connections, real-world applications of AI, and responsible use of technology right from the preparatory and middle stages.
  • This move is being seen as a significant step toward making Indian school education future-ready and globally competitive in emerging technologies.
