What happened
After late-night talks on 27 September 2026 between the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) and the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the planned three-day nationwide bank strike for 28–30 September 2026 has been deferred. Branches are expected to function normally from Monday.
Both sides agreed to form a high-level committee immediately to examine declaring remaining Saturdays as holidays / a five-day banking week, explore alternatives, consult stakeholders and work toward a solution acceptable to customers as well as staff. Discussions on Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) for Scale IV and above officers will also continue with proposed modifications.
Why it matters for exams
- UFBU is the umbrella of major bank unions; IBA represents bank managements
- 30 September is half-yearly closing for banks — a sensitive operational window
- PSBs and RRBs had already been kept open on Sunday 27 September (Finance Ministry / RBI) to cushion a long holiday–strike stretch
Banking aspirants should note the institutional names (IBA, UFBU), the five-day week demand, and that the strike is deferred — not permanently cancelled — pending committee outcomes.
