TDB Backs Agnikul's Reusable Agnibaan Rocket – 25 September 2026

What happened

On 25 September 2026, the Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), signed an agreement with Chennai-based space start-up Agnikul Cosmos Private Limited for ₹200 crore of support under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The money will be given through Optionally Convertible Debentures (OCDs).

The project will build the Agnibaan RLV, a reusable launch vehicle. The aim is to take the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and above up to TRL-8. Most reusable rockets recover only the first stage. Agnikul is aiming to reuse the whole system, including a reusable upper stage, a descent propulsion system and a semi-cryogenic engine that can throttle down deeply and restart.

Background

Agnikul already built Agnibaan, an orbital-class launcher, and the Agnilet, a single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine made in-house. TDB had funded the company once before, for a modular small-satellite launcher. The new support falls under the RDI Fund's priority area of advanced and reusable launch vehicles.

Why it matters for exams

Private space activity, reusable launchers and DST funding tools often appear in UPSC Prelims (Science & Tech), SSC and banking GA. Terms like TRL, OCD and semi-cryogenic propulsion are asked as concept questions.

Key facts for exams

  • Amount: 200 crore via OCDs under the RDI Fund
  • Beneficiary: Agnikul Cosmos Pvt Ltd, Chennai (Tamil Nadu)
  • TDB Secretary: Rajesh Kumar Pathak (per the PIB release)
  • TDB: statutory body under DST, set up under the Technology Development Board Act, 1995
  • TRL scale: 1 to 9. TRL-8 means the actual system is complete and qualified
  • Agnilet: single-piece 3D-printed engine; Agnibaan uses semi-cryogenic (kerosene + liquid oxygen) propulsion
