What happened
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on 29 September 2026 that there will be no significant drop in Kharif foodgrain production for crop year 2026-27 (July–June) despite El Niño concerns, a rainfall deficit of about 12%, and floods/drought in parts of India. He spoke after a two-day national conference on Rabi preparedness. Floods have affected about 6.11 lakh hectares; acreage under paddy is down about 16.32 lakh hectares, with a shift towards pulses and coarse cereals.
Background
El Niño often suppresses monsoon rainfall in India. Chouhan noted that drought is generally considered when the shortfall exceeds 20% over the relevant period. Concerns are concentrated in Karnataka, Maharashtra, parts of Andhra Pradesh (including Rayalaseema), Telangana and Rajasthan. A Central team was to visit Karnataka on 3 October; Maharashtra also sought assessment.
